How to prevent RSI when you type all day: what helps, what's a myth
Your wrists ache by mid-afternoon. Maybe there's a tingle in your fingers, or a dull soreness that creeps up your forearm after a long stretch of typing. You've probably already tried an ergonomic keyboard, a wrist rest, or just "sitting up straighter" — and you're not sure any of it is actually working.
The short answer: the single most evidence-backed fix isn't a piece of hardware — it's short, regular breaks that get your hands off the keyboard entirely, scheduled like meetings on your calendar rather than left to memory. Everything else (keyboard shape, wrist position, mouse choice) helps at the margins, but it's the breaks that show up again and again in the research as the thing that changes outcomes.
What actually causes RSI from typing
"RSI" (repetitive strain injury) isn't one diagnosis — it's an umbrella term for a cluster of overuse injuries (tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, tenosynovitis) that develop when tendons and nerves in the hand, wrist, and forearm are loaded repeatedly without enough recovery time in between. The U.S. CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tracks these as musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and notes they're driven by a combination of repetition, awkward posture, and — critically — insufficient recovery time, not by typing volume alone. That last part matters: two people can type the same number of words a day, and the one who never pauses is at meaningfully higher risk.
What actually helps
Breaks, specifically. The strongest evidence here comes from a 2025 Cochrane review by Tessy Luger and colleagues, "Work-break interventions for preventing musculoskeletal symptoms and disorders in healthy workers," which pooled results across multiple controlled trials of break schedules in computer-based jobs. Its consistent finding: workers given structured break schedules — rather than being left to self-regulate — reported less musculoskeletal discomfort than those without them.
That tracks with an earlier, frequently cited randomized controlled trial: researchers led by Swenneke van den Heuvel gave 268 computer workers with existing neck or arm complaints, across 22 office locations, one of three conditions — no change, software-prompted extra breaks, or software-prompted breaks with exercises — for eight weeks, published in the Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment & Health. Both break groups reported meaningfully higher recovery rates than the control group (55% vs. 34%), and adding exercises to the break didn't outperform simply taking the break. The pause itself did the work.
Neutral wrist posture, secondarily. OSHA's ergonomic guidance for computer workstations recommends keeping wrists straight and in line with the forearm while typing, rather than bent up, down, or to the side — sustained wrist flexion or extension is what compresses the carpal tunnel and irritates tendons over time. This is worth setting up correctly, but it's a risk-reduction measure, not a substitute for recovery time.
What's a myth
"A wrist rest will fix it." Both OSHA and the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) caution that wrist rests are commonly used incorrectly — people lean their wrists directly onto the pad while typing, which puts sustained pressure on the same carpal tunnel structures they're meant to protect. A wrist rest is meant to support the palm briefly between keystrokes, not act as a cushion your wrist stays pressed against all day.
"Buy the ergonomic keyboard and you're done." A split or tented keyboard can reduce awkward wrist angles, and that's real — but none of the research above suggests hardware alone resolves symptoms without also addressing break frequency. Treat it as one input among several, not a cure.
"It's just typing volume — do less." Typing less helps, but it's frequently not realistic for a full workday, and it's also not what the evidence points to as the main lever. The Cochrane review and the van den Heuvel trial both isolate break frequency and structure — not overall typing reduction — as the variable that moved outcomes.
What to do today, no product required
- Set up your keyboard and mouse at elbow height, with wrists straight rather than bent up or angled outward.
- Stop leaning your wrists on anything while actively typing — palms can rest between bursts, not during them.
- Get up from your desk every hour, even briefly. Do 10+ shoulder rolls standing up, shake out your hands, and take a 10-minute walk if you can — moving blood through the forearm and shoulder matters more than any single stretch.
- Build in shorter pauses too — even 30 seconds away from the keyboard every 15–20 minutes, standing if possible, adds up across a workday of typing.
